It is inevitable for our bodies to experience a lot of changes as we grow mature. Our bodies start to grow weaker, and illnesses become easier to catch as well. One of the most accepted changes in mature adults would be vision changes. Our eyes grow older with us too, and while some may be blessed with perfect eyesight even in their mature years, others are not so lucky. The good thing is that there are ways to care for your eyes and keep them healthy for as long as possible. Here are some ways to slow down age-related vision changes in your loved ones.
Schedule Annual Eye Exams
Going for annual eye exams will help to keep track of the changes our eyes are experiencing. It also allows you the opportunity to get the prescription glasses you need to maintain visibility. Your vision may start to double or become a blur and could even cause pain for the eyes if medical attention is not sought. You can talk to your optometrist about multifocal lenses should you find it hard to read near objects. It is also recommended to have yourself checked for cataracts during these exams, which is a prominent age-related disease.
Avoid Harmful Elements
Elements such as cigarette smoke, long periods on the computer, and UV rays should be avoided as they can increase the risks of eye diseases like macular degeneration. Household cleaners and chemicals are harmful to the eyes as well, so be mindful when using them. You should also be wary of power tools such as drills or saws when in use. Always use protective goggles when using power tools or harmful chemicals to prevent any fly-aways from getting into your eyes and scratching them. Eye drops are good to have in your bag in case you get something in your eye, as well as when they are dry.
Zooming
Zooming is a great exercise that can be done to slow vision changes in you or your loved ones as well. It should be done slowly and starts with you having one arm stretched in front of you. Keep your hand in a fist with the thumb out. Keep the focus on your thumb and slowly bring it closer to your face, stopping when it is about three inches from you. After which, you can slowly extend your arm out again while keeping the focus on your thumb.
Near/Far Focusing
This exercise can help restore the ability of one’s eyes to quickly shift focus between objects at different distances. You can start by looking at an object near you and focusing on it. Allow your eyes to stay on the object until it clearly focuses on it. Once your vision of the item is clear, change your focus to another item that is slightly further away. Similarly, wait until your eyes focus on that object and before focusing on other objects that are even further, and repeat this exercise as much as you want.
